Registration for AI competition for schoolchildren extended until November 10

Oct 28, 2020

Registration for the discipline of the academic competition Artificial Intelligence that the Kruzhok movement (National Technology Initiative) and AI-ACADEMY are jointly holding for schoolchildren of 8‒11 grades with support from Sberbank Charitable Foundation Investment to the Future has been extended until November 10.

Contesting schoolchildren will work on Natural Language Processing (NLP) issues and create an AGI-based question-answering system. These algorithms are at the core of search engines, chatbots, automated call centers and customer care, processing citizen appeals, collecting customer feedback, and doing other important things.

Competition in the Artificial Intelligence discipline will be held in the following three stages:

  • September 3 to November 10, 2020: registration
  • October 2 to November 11, 2020: first preliminary stage (rounds in mathematics and informatics)
  • November 16, 2020, to January 10, 2021: second preliminary stage (NLP round)
  • March 2021: finals in Moscow.

Alexander Vedyakhin, First Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board, Sberbank:

“In solving problems with the help of AI, schoolchildren often perform as well as adult professionals. We saw this during the last academic competition and the last Digital Lesson on AI, which was designed by Charitable Foundation Investment to the Future with support from Sberbank. And we can see this now at hackathons in which schoolchildren from all over the country are participating actively as part of the online contest AI Journey. Therefore, Sber will keep doing its best to identify talented children and engage them in the exciting and promising industry of artificial intelligence. The academic competition jointly held by the Kruzhok movement NTI and the AI Academy for schoolchildren is a very effective tool for this. Furthermore, I invite all middle and high school students who are interested in AI to AI Journey Junior, a first-of-its-kind online conference to be held in Russia on December 5.”

Pyotr Polozhevets, Executive Director of Sberbank Charitable Foundation Investment to the Future:

“For the second year in a row at the AI competition children find answers to interesting, important, and serious problems facing the modern economy. The implementation of such projects forms new education where students are not passive objects, but active creators of knowledge and experience; education that draws on the results of thousands of studies on the developmental effects of learning and how the brain learns; education that does not prepare you for real life happening someday, but which is real life itself.”

During the competition, participants will attend webinars with Sber data scientists, where they can immerse themselves in natural language processing (NLP), learn about the latest developments in this field, and find out how to apply them to the competition challenges.

The winners and prize-winners of the competition will enjoy preferential terms when entering universities, while the participants of the five best teams according to the results of the final competition will receive gift certificates for tuition worth 150,000 to 500,000 rubles, valuable prizes, as well as an invitation for a Data Science internship in the Sberbank ecosystem.

The Artificial Intelligence discipline is part of the academic competition staged by the Kruzhok movement NTI for the second year in a row. Last year, the discipline became the fourth most popular of the 29 disciplines of the competition and welcomed over 3,700 schoolchildren who registered for it. Participants were creating an algorithm that predicted the likelihood of making purchases in certain categories using customers' transaction history.

The discipline is one of the academic competition’s challenges jointly designed by the Kruzhok movement NTI and AI-ACADEMY for school children, a nationwide education project run by Sberbank Charitable Foundation Investment to the Future with support from Sber and designed to educate, train, and work with schoolchildren gifted in AI.
