Sber allows debit and credit SberCard holders to use foreign currency exchange rate freeze when buying products and services

Sep 23, 2021

Sber has added the debit and credit SberCard to the list of products that can fix the exchange rate of foreign currency when buying goods or services with a card. SberCard Travel used to be the only card with this option.

This functionality will be particularly useful to customers making purchases in foreign currencies abroad or on foreign websites. Instead of being charged right away, money is often debited from your card a few hours or even days after you place an order. Exchange rates sometimes go up between these two stages. The exchange rate will be frozen for holders of debit and credit SberCards as of the moment of authentication and purchase, making debiting transactions more predictable.

Igor Kovalyov, director of Customer’s Wallet, Sberbank:

“We were the first major Russian bank to market the currency exchange rate freeze. The option used to be available to SberCard Travel holders exclusively, while now it is available to all customers holding debit and credit SberCards. We consider the incorporation of this function into our flagship products timely. First, purchases in foreign online stores are growing more popular. Second, international travelling is reviving, and customers often find it more convenient to use the cards they are accustomed to when paying abroad. We strive to improve customer experience, make card transactions more transparent, and the currency rate freeze function definitely benefits that.”

Previously, Sber made the line of its bank cards simpler and introduced the debit SberCard, a universal and convenient card product with the best deals. In August, the bank marketed its new and free SberCard credit card with the grace period of 120 days. It is optimal in any circumstances and comes with unique advantages for its holders.
