SberIndex: Russians getting ready to travel during New Year holidays
Between December 7 and 13, SberIndex analysts say, consumer spending was somewhat close to the figures seen last week, losing –2.8% y-o-y after a 2.3% decline a week before that.
Retail turnover has been staying above last year's metrics for two weeks straight, whereas the service sector is depressed (–19.4% y-o-y).
The Airline Ticket segment has been seeing higher consumer activity for two weeks in a row (–15.2% y-o-y on December 7‒13 after a 50% decline back in November). Furthermore, there are positive shifts in spending on railway tickets (–32.7% y-o-y), in November and early December there were also purchases in the Travel Agencies segment.
This proves that Russians are still going to travel on the New Year holidays.
You can keep track of how Russians travel on SberIndex.ru in the Tourism Index tab.
SberIndex analysts also spotted that the number of active outlets keeps climbing steadily, adding 0.3% every week, which is in line with the seasonal dynamics.

SberIndex.ru is an analytical website by Sberbank that illustrates how life in Russia has changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, you can find three key indexes on the website, all of them based on anonymized data. These are an incidence model, the consumer activity index, and consumer activity changes. The all-new Business section features the evolution of gross payroll and change in small business activity. The website also has other studies, including all SberIndex lab ones (former SberData).
